Instruments for the Psychological Assessment of Visually Impaired People: Technologies for Development and Adaptation

The adaptation of psychological tests for people with disabilities is a highly complex process, once it requires special attention with regard to instrument´s quality and accessibility issues. When it comes to visual impairment, it is also necessary to consider its various degrees, whose characteristic, however, make impossible the development of psychological instruments in traditional formats. During the adaptation of psychological instruments, technologies become great allies, once assistive technologies allow people with visual disabilities to use computer and internet with the same extent of those individuals without impairment. Additionally, it is worth highlighting the importance of modernization of psychological instruments that use such technologies. Nevertheless, when those assistive technologies are applied within the adaptation of instruments for specific groups, people with certain types of disabilities, and even those without disabilities, do not benefit from these instruments. In order to minimize such limitation, universal design has been proposed, which aims to obtain full or maximum possible accessibility. Therefore, through the application of universal design principles, along with new technologies to psychological instruments, a broad population might be covered by those instruments, regardless of physical impairments, furthermore, maximizing their accessibility.
