Difficulties Experienced by Mothers during the Hospitalization of their Babies at Neonatal Units

Abstract

The hospitalization of a baby changes the family's balance, which needs to be reorganized around the newborn recuperation. Usually the mother is the family member who accompanies the baby in the hospital. Thereby, thinking in the newborn integral care, this study aims to describe the feelings and difficulties that mothers experience during the baby hospitalization period, through a qualitative study, with an action research approach, taking as research background the neonatology sector at University Hospital of UFGD in Dourados, MS. For data collection, voice recordings and subsequent transcription were performed, as well as, in field diaries notes from 12 mothers’ meetings in Operative Group modality idealized by the psychoanalyst Pichon-Riviére. Data collection was from February 22 to May 11, 2016, and the collected data saturation defined its conclusion. For data analysis the Bardin's content analysis was used. Sample consisted of 52 mothers. Results were divided into three categories: i) hospital institution: with regard to organization and physical structure; ii) health professionals: their offensive and non-empathetic behaviors in the care of babies and their mothers; iii) family: suffering and reorganization during the hospitalization process. Therefore, it is important to understand that the mothers’ suffering goes beyond questions related to the baby's pathology, it is necessary to invest in physical structure and adequate organization during their hospitalization; health team training; and to focus on care to the families as well as to the patients.
