Socio-educational Measure of Deprivation of Liberty and Future Expectations of Adolescents and their Relatives

Abstract

From a conception of adolescence based on intrapsychic and sociocultural factors, this study aimed to understand the future expectations of adolescents and their relatives in the context of a socio-educational measure of deprivation of liberty. It consists of a qualitative multiple case study conducted with ten participants (five adolescents and five relatives of these adolescents) related to an institution of deprivation of liberty. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews and patient records and analyzed in the light of the cross-case synthesis. The adolescents mentioned the desire of not getting into future transgressions, turning work into a core element of their trajectories, and tightening family bonds. In turn, the relatives (which were the mothers of the adolescents) intended to be more participative and engage in more dialogues with their children, besides hoping for them to get involved with their jobs. These mothers showed uncertainty towards the possibility of their children committing new transgressions. Moreover, participants mentioned the necessity of moving out to not put their lives at risk. The results highlight the value in enabling reflections and re-significations when adolescents are no longer deprived of liberty, recognizing the importance of public policies that address the feeling of belonging and territorial issues of adolescents egressed from the socio-educational context.
