Teachers face to sexuality and gender during school routine

As a result of a doctoral research, during which various recurring individual interviews were carried out with 4 basic and high school teachers from a public school in Bahia, we verified that the lack of knowledge about the ethical guidelines established by the State to fight sexual and gender discrimination is implicated in the processes of professional formation, as well as in “personal beliefs” of teachers. Although the political field where these guidelines are produced is also effervescent and contradictory, here we focus on the teachers’ attitudes. These, singularly amalgamating “life experiences”, professional backgrounds and fragments of the official guidelines, are supported by the single constitution of subjects. Since the possibilities of the investigated teachers to “deal” with sexual education and its meanings in relation to the students, were produced from the standpoint of their own personal approach. Focusing on the mediated processes, we discussed this historical scenario that, in this case, shows the subordination of the professional posture to “personal” viewpoints.
