The present study has as objective to evaluate the mental state of institutionalized aged in the county of Jequié-BA. The cognitive tracking was done with the utilization of the Mini-exame of mental state - MEEM (Mini-mental State Examination-MMSE). The sample was composed by 60 understood aged in the age level of 60 to 80 years (58,3%) and above (41,7%). 40% of the interviewed ones presented preserved cognitive functions and 60% demonstrated some cognitive alteration which is not suggested as a deficit. The latter, 50% are included in the interval of 26 to 24 points, 33.4% in the interval of 30 to 26 points and 16.6% are distributed in the interval of 23 points or less. In this perspective it is believed that the more subsidies on the process of healthful aging, the more it will be able to work to the dementia prevention as well as to identify precociously signals of this.
