Body image and eating disorders of adolescent athletes: a review

The aim of this study was to review the literature issues on body image and eating disorders in a population of adolescent athletes. Electronic searches were conducted in the following databases: "Web of Science", "SciELO", "Scopus", "Pubmed", "Medline" and "Lilacs". How descriptors, were used the terms "body image" and "eating disorders", indexed in system descriptors of Health Science (DeCs/MeSH) terms and also the associated "body dissatisfaction", "athletes", "adolescence" and "teenager". The search was for the period 2002 to 2012. The results showed the existence of hundreds of investigations on the issues in the adolescent population. However, the surveys were filtered only in the sporting context. The findings showed some controversy. Anyway, it is believed that there is an association between body image and eating disorders in athletes. However, it is necessary the development of research in this field to answer these questions, therefore, are encouraged to research these variables.
