Urban violence: the teachers' assessment about the school's performance

The aim was to investigate how public and private school teachers describe and assess the school’s performance concerning violence. It was also to identify the actions the school should have about it, according to these teachers. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, concerning several aspects of violence. In the teachers’ answers, four categories of actions were identified: preventive, repairing, stimulating and null. The private school teachers showed a vision of school as basically preventive, whereas the public school ones conceived it as repairing or null. The most suggested actions by public school teachers included the participation of the family and the community. The influence of work contexts, different in both groups, guided the discussion of the results.
