Prejudice in school: meanings attributed by adolescents in high school

In this article we discuss how the adolescents understand and experience the School prejudice. The main objective is to investigate the significance and meanings attributed to situations of prejudice among adolescents. For data collection we used semi-structured interviews with 12 students between 14 and 17 years from a public school and a private in Joinville - Southern Brazil. Heller (1989), Silva (2005), Ozella (2002) and Aguiar (2006) are our theoretical supports. Through the analysis of the reports we created four different meanings: a) prejudices: types and meanings, b) manifestations of prejudice and feelings, c) movements of inclusion / exclusion from school: the perceptions of adolescents and d) Prejudice: misconceptions and silences during school discussions. The discussions reveal ambiguities and difficulties to identify and address the situations of prejudice experienced in school. These results point to the need to work the issue of diversity and prejudice more frequently at school.
