In this last Editorial of our Journal I would like to discuss with our readers a few ideas about aging and the human communication. This theme is being discussed by the CA-MS of CNPq, where Professor Léslie and I represent the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences. Until next years' July, the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences, represented by myself, is responsible for the management of the CA.

The CA-MS is working in order to move the financial agencies to open a specific process about aging and all of its implications: bio-psycho-social and occupational related to the areas of Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and Occupational Therapy.

A better understanding, and consequently better strategic propositions, for the improvement in the quality of aging critically depend on an interdisciplinary collaboration. A fundamental step between the different groups would be to give some direction to the perspectives, i.e. researches that could give a global view of the elderly.

In terms of the human communication, well known contributions of the Hearing science already exist, but in areas such as Language, Speech, Oral Motricity and Functions problems still need to be better identified and researches need to present more appropriate methodology - specially when considering natural aging. Validated and reliable clinical tests would lead to a more efficient communication health promotion and consequently to treatments that are better adapted to the population.

In its electronic version (www.revistaprofono.com.br), the Journal presents a Supplement with the abstracts of the researches presented in the II Brazilian Congress of Genetics for Communication Sciences and Disorders which occurred in March 2008 (Fortaleza - CE); in its printed version (Volume 20, Number 4) the Journal presents a Guest Editorial written by Professor Antonio Richieri-Costa. The infinite possibility of studies that are possible for the speech-language and hearing pathologists - from the gene to the very elderly - is what makes me, and certainly many of us, want to continue to fight, always.

Even if our path is not easy, even if it requires a lot of patience to sediment our knowledge, our areas of research, our right to give our opinion and to be acknowledged; our goal - man's quality of life - is transpersonal, it is a goal to be reached, slowly, by life's own dynamic.

Merry Christmas, hoping that 2009 brings health, peace and solidarity!

Claudia
