[The German historical-critical edition]

Abstract:

This paper discusses the historical critical model proposed by Hans Zeller. The starting point of the argumentation is the definition of the concept of version. The paper then demonstrates that, in such a scenario, all testimonies attested as autographs po ssess the same level of authority within a text’s tradition, since they correspond to the author’s will at certain moments in the text’s history. This proposition is contrasted with the ideas underlying the copy text method, an Anglo Saxon editorial paradi gm that advocates valuing the author’s final intention, with only those lessons that represent the author’s last will for his text being included in the critical edition.
