Health promotion: a stance from the perspective of Popular Education in the Brazilian context

Abstract

The text discusses the boundaries, vulnerabilities and instituting modes of the concept of Health Promotion in conjunction with the concept of Popular Education as a basis for operationalizing actions in the field of Collective Health. Health Promotion, in its historical-conceptual evolution and support for health practices, is analyzed based on Latin American thought anchored in the perspective of the “social production of health”. Considerations are presented about the concrete forms that Health Promotion has acquired as a tool for certain institutional arrangements in the Unified Health System, focusing on the educational dimension of practices, starting from the perspective of Popular Education as an approach committed to producing inclusive processes in health and overcoming inequalities and inequities that affect the life and the construction of democracy, which, in the Brazilian context, was configured through “Popular Health Education”.
