The ground(-universe) of Popular Health Education: knowledge and practices that break with what has been established

Abstract

The study aims to assess the influence of the practices and knowledge of popular educators on hegemonic health education actions. A case study in which semi-structured interviews was carried out with 23 educators during the Popular Health Education Training Course selection process. A content analysis of the data was carried out, with the help of Iramuteq for interpretation. Popular Health Education has presented itself as a field that articulates accumulated practices and knowledge in education, health, art, and social movements, breaking with the fragmentation of expertises, the mercantilisation of knowledge and professions, as well as the hierarchy between academic and popular knowledge. When reflecting on being a popular educator, the subjects brought up their singularities as essential and the break with the hegemonic idea of an educator. The articulation between different elements points to a universe sometimes made up of contradictions between them. Popular health education has proved to be a space for breaking with hegemonic perspectives on health education, as it presents itself as a dialogue between diverse and unique practices, knowledge, and values, which, open to contradiction, is intended to be a collective construction.
