This paper discusses some concerns about the family doctor, wondering who is this subject within a biologicist medical formation, who does not value primary attention, making his professional ideal confused. It aims to present a discussion that, in the inter-relation between education and work, demands reflection on the professional identity of the family doctor. It carries out a qualitative approach on family doctors' practices in the City of Rio de Janeiro, as object of analysis. As a result, it presents considerations that reflect the reproduction of a traditional attention model, leading to the idea that continuing education is an important strategy in the search of population reception.
