Children, hospital care and familiarity networks: how to manage health complexity?

Abstract

The article focuses on the care of children who attend hospitals and their networks created for support, in addition to the place attributed to families in this scenario. The understanding is assumed that networks of relationships are constitutive of the care of children and adolescents with chronic and complex health conditions. These networks are discussed in the light of authors who contribute to this conceptual field, such as Elizabeth Bott, Cláudia Fonseca and Cynthia Sarti. It aims to support the organization of families to participate in care, considering their networks of relationships. A qualitative study was carried out in a children's hospital sector in Rio de Janeiro. Data production techniques were participant observation and semi-structured interviews with families in the waiting room. The material obtained was transcribed and the analysis followed the theoretical-analytical perspective and interpretation of meanings. Five family typologies were identified. The construction of familiarity networks based on the relationships between caregivers, the researcher and professionals, was the analytical axis presented. Participation in care emphasizes the networks of familiarities built that go beyond consanguinity and the circulation of children makes the process viable.
