Active lives and broken helmets: systematic mapping of the association between suicide and sport

Abstract

The issue of suicidal behavior has become especially relevant in recent years because of its effects on individuals and society. Although this topic has been studied extensively in North America and Europe, the relationship between suicide and sport is comparatively under-researched in the Latin-American context. This paper aims to contribute to this literature by supplementing existing research with an analysis of the association between suicidal behavior and sports in a more inclusive international context. This paper surveys academic productions between 2000 and 2021 using a systematic Mapping method to highlight the imbalance in research production on a global scale. The paper demonstrates the importance of participation in sports activity in the prevention of suicidal behavior, in addition to the importance of investigating mediational variables that contribute to the processes of prevention and development of both suicidal ideation and attempt.
