Transsexuality and Sports Practices: An Analysis from the Recognition Theory

Abstract

This qualitative study investigated the inclusion of transgender individuals in sports based on the recognition theory. Conducted through five online focus groups with 32 participants, three thematic axes were identified. The first, “Context of transgender inclusion in sports - non-recognition”, reveals sports experiences marked by violence and lack of recognition. The second, “The urgency of expanding the Sports debate”, explores sports as a form of socialization and survival. The third, “Recognition and passability - cis-heteronormativity as a regulator of recognition”, addresses the link between recognition and compliance with hegemonic gender norms. Despite barriers, the participation of transgender individuals in sports has the potential to challenge gender norms.
