João Vicente Torres Homem: a description of the medicai career in nineteenth-century Brazil

By examining the case study of João Vicente Torres Homem (1837-87), the article describes and analyzes typical patterns in medicai careers as established in nineteenth-century Brazil. The institutionalization of clinicai medicine brought the prevalence of a pattern in intellectual training, professional careers, and the production of knowledge that differed from those patterns inaugurated in the early twentieth century upon organization of the first medicai institutes dedicated to scientific research.
