Professional training and practice profile of piano teachers in Porto Alegre (Brazil)

This paper presents the results of a cross-sectional survey conducted with 104 piano teachers in Porto Alegre (Brazil). Concerning the professional training, about 60% of the interviewed teachers possessed an academic degree in Music, and less than half of them were Piano undergraduates. Most of the teachers considered that they have learned how to teach within their daily practice and one third followed the model provided by their previous piano teachers. Regarding their professional practice profile, most of the participants teach at home, followed by those who work in music schools or at the student’s home. The results revealed that the investigated teachers could be described according to what RAMALHO, NUÑEZ & GAUTHIER (2004) named as improvised, artisan and professional teacher models.
