This paper presents an application of the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), used to identify the sources of variability observed in a process of lamination of steel bars in a metal-mechanic plant located at RJo Grande do Sul. The major source of variability identified was the type of steel. The study of the variability sources served as a base for the establishment of the Statistical Process Control (SPQ, which is described together with the traditional stability and capacity studies. The joint use of ANOVA and SPC may represent Important benefices to the companies. The ANOVA provides a strategy for grouping variables and for the selective choice of the control charts to be used.
