ETHICAL-POLITICAL DISCOURSES AND EVERYDAY SOCIAL PRACTICES IN ZAPATISTA COMMUNITIES

ABSTRACT

The zapatista movement has been characterized by an extensive framework of social practices and discourses intimately related to issues of ethical-political nature. The focus of our research was describing, interpreting and analyzing those fundamental elements through the application of a qualitative methodology by reviewing documental sources and conduction of an ethnographic fieldwork based on participant observation. The data obtained were processed using interpretative analysis. The notion of social practice is approached from the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu and his concept of 'habitus', coupled with Anthony Giddens' theory of structuration; while the aspect of discourse is conceptualized as a social practice. The article describes how this framework of ethical-political practices and discourses acts to facilitate new actions in Zapatista communities and, as a result, helps to support both the continuity and transformations of this ethical-political movement.
