The illusion of images: smoking depictions in brazilian movies - psychosocial approach

This study includes the psychosocial approach in a comprehensive tobacco discussion. The research describes the tobacco content in a sample of twenty Brazilian films. In this sample half of the movies portray tobacco use and seven of them include packaging or brand depictions of tobacco products. In conclusion, the use of entertainment media as a vehicle of construction of social norms, beliefs and behavior patterns cannot be minimized and it can be observed as an important content to be assessed in the movies. Tobacco imagery can contribute to build perceptions about smoking among young people, may influence youth initiation of smoking by creating the belief that smoking is a normative behavior.
