The violence of romantic love in the narrative of two Mexican women

Abstract

The goal of this article is to understand the relationship between romantic love and violence in the narrative of women who care for their children without the physical presence of a father, from the perspective of social constructionism and gender. To do this, narrative interviews were conducted with two women aged 36 and 40 who live in Mexico City. Later, a thematic narrative analysis was carried out, that showed, first, that the way of relating with a partner is strongly linked to the idea of romantic love, which is crossed by a gender condition. This favors particular ways of being oneself and of being in a relationship, thus constituting the romanticized woman. Secondly, from these ways of relating, conditions were created for the appearance and maintenance of violence in the couple.
