Lesbian and gay parenting is a theme that activates opinions and positions in the various sectors of society which, in turn, can influence the attitude of every professional working in the area of parenting responsibilities. In this article we intend to analyze how the Portuguese laws converge/do not converge with the principles emerging from scientific research that have been adopted by associations such as the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in the area of lesbian and gay parenting. Also, we intend to make a critical analysis of the studies reported in the literature, considering possible implications for research and professional practices.
