SOCIAL REPRESENTATION OF RURAL EDUCATION FOR TEACHERS IN TRAINING

Abstract

This paper analyzes the representational processes and contents of students enrolled in a teacher education course in a public institution in Pará State, Brazil, regarding Rural Education. A set of 19 interviews were carried out with students from various campuses offering this course. A computerized content analysis of interviews made with the software ALCESTE(c) revealed four classes of discourse, one of them specifically linked to the theme "Rural Education". The social representation of Rural Education for this group of students is organized around the rural-urban dichotomy. This dichotomy extends to all aspects of training, both in terms of content and in terms of teaching. It was also possible to identify the processes of objectification and anchoring which are in the genesis of social representation of Rural Education.
