PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND PSYCHOTHERAPY WITH ELDERLY PEOPLE

The present article seeks to ascertain the relation between psychopharmacos and psychotherapy processes in elderly people assisted at service-oriented schools, from 1997 to 2011, in Vale do Rio Pardo (RS). It is a documentary research based around the description of 73 dossiers from users aged 60 or above. The survey is part of a broader project which includes similar researches around other age based groups (below 60 years). Research shows that treatments are sought mostly by women and the main reason is related to sadness/pessimism symptoms. In addition to that, it reveals that a great number of psychotropic medications are being used by the interviewed senior citizens, and some of them are taking more than one at a time, a fact which reinforces studies pointing to the ever-increasing use of psychopharmacos in present society.
