Divine Filiation in the Light of Johann Tauler: Reception and Manifestation

ABSTRACT

In this article, illuminated by select excerpts from the sermons of the medieval mystic Johann Tauler, the theology of divine filiation is explored. The approach method employed was exegetical, drawing insights from the French texts provided by the Équipe de Recherches sur les Mystiques Rhénans from the Universities of Lorraine, Brussels, Lyon, and the Cusanus Institut f. Forschung in Trier, along with contributions from Gérard Eschbach. The thesis posits that the Son of God, since His eternal begetting, serves as the archetype of humanity. Humanity, conceived in eternity as a promise, originates from the Son, and the injunction “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” from Genesis 1:26, signifies the fulfillment of an eternal plan rooted in mutual recognition: “You are my son; today I have begotten you” and “Abba, Father.” This union is accessible to humanity through reception of God and in the manifestation of this relationship in everyday life.
