The Synodality as a Leitmotif: Contributions to Ecclesial Identity

ABSTRACT

This article aims to reflect on the dimension of synodality as an expression of the Church’s authentic way of being, that is, as its identity. For this, it appropriates some aspects of the synodal journey, which has just begun under a new methodology. In general, it considers the question of synodality as the leitmotif of Francis’ pontificate, as already manifested in several of his magisterial texts. The first part of the text holds a discussion based on the etymology of the term synod, evolving towards some of its interpretative possibilities. The second part is oriented around the three methodological concepts fundamental for the process of synodal consultation, namely: encountering, listening and discerning. The last part focuses on some of the most evident achievements of the internalization of synodality as an ordinary form of expression of ecclesial life.
