The Issue of Synodality in the Catholic Church: Enlightened by the Past to Think about the Church Dreamt by Francis

ABSTRACT

Reflecting on synodality is an urgency for Catholics, in view of the perception of the reigning transnational conservatism, whose evils are already manifesting itself everywhere, in the form of health, environmental and humanitarian crises, in which the throwaway culture highlights what Pope Francis calls the experience of a Third World War in pieces. From a formal point of view, we ask: how a look at the challenges of the past can strengthen Pope Francis’ ecclesological dream of realizing a synodal Church? The methodology of this research is a bibliographic review. The expected results are limited to the understanding that the more we reflect on synodality and its ecclesiological richness to respond to the challenges of each time, the better to show the importance and need for establishing an experience of communion, participation and the mission of the Church as a reality to be embraced by the baptized.
