“The Rock was Christ” (1cor 10:4C) A Reading of the Targum in the First Letter to the Corinthians

ABSTRACT

In this article, the presence of a reading of the Targum of the Pentateuch in the First Letter to the Corinthians is investigated. In a warning to the Church in Corinth regarding idolatry (1Cor 10:1-14), Paul quotes elements of the narratives of the crossing of the desert, like that the fathers drank from a spiritual rock that follows then, adding that “this rock was Christ” (1Cor 10:4c). The objective is to show the existence of a parallel between the targum and others works of the Judaic literature and a writing of the Paulinian epistolary, putting the question of a dependence of this one by rapport of the first ones. The methodology was that of bibliographical research, reconsidering some indications left by some authors that work yet with this subject. To achieve this objective, four steps were taken: presentation of the targumic tradition, its relationship with the New Testament, the tradition that is at the base of the citation in 1Cor 10:4 and the insertion of this tradition in the context of the Letter. The result achieved is modest, since it is not possible to affirm without doubt that Paul is really quote a targumic tradition, but it is important for to situate the Apostol argumentation in the context of the Judaic interpretation of the Scriptures, made in his time.
