The objective of this essay is to reflect on the use of various modalities of narratives of one’s self in studies of subjectivity. Autobiographical writing is pointed out as circumstance of subjective construction. Theorists such as Lejeune, Gusdoff, Miraux and Howarth are used to discuss conceptual and methodological issues related to the vicissitudes of life stories. Accordingly, the essay goes through some aspects of the circumscription of the (auto)biographical field, especially in relation to the context of Modernity. Finally, aspects of the writing of one’s self in the complex field of research in psychoanalysis are discussed.
