COMPLEMENTARY USE OF INTERACTION MATRIX METHOD AND CHECK LIST TO EVALUATE QUALITATIVELY AND QUANTITATIVELY ENVIRONMENT IMPACT OF A FORESTRY INCENTIVES PROGRAM

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study was to assess, qualitatively and quantitatively, the environmental impacts of forestry incentives program, through the Interaction Matrix method, assisted by a list of additional verification, known as a Check-List Method. It was also verified the applicability and the complementarily of these methods to the present case. This program occurred in the region of influence of the furniture producing area of Ubá, in Zona da Mata, state of Minas Gerais. The method of the interaction matrix identified 473 impacts, 172 of them were positive (36.4 %) and 301 negative (63.6 %), while the Check-List Method identified 94 impacts, 34 positive (36.2 %) and 60 negative (63.8 %). It was concluded that the program has negative and positiveenvironmental impacts, in a ratio of about two to one, respectively, and the methods used were shown to be effective for the situation, since they were able to identify and describe, in its fullness, such environmental impacts, and in a complementary manner.
