Floristic composition of a riverine forest in the Brazilian Atlantic rain forest, Ubatuba, SP

A floristic survey was carried out in a forest tract alongside the Fazenda river, in the Picinguaba Division of the Serra do Mar State Park, northern coast of the State of São Paulo, municipality of Ubatuba (44°48' W and 23°22' S). A total of 40 quadrats (10 m x 10 m) was located along the river margins. All trees with a minimum of 20 cm perimeter at breast height (DBH = 6.36 cm) were recorded. The 673 sampled trees were distributed in 120 species, 83 genera and 37 families. The greatest species richness was found for Myrtaceae (28), Fabaceae (11), Rubiaceae and Lauraceae (8). The most numerous populations were Euterpe edulis Mart. (Arecaceae), Chrysophyllum flexuosum Mart. (Sapotaceae), Coussarea nodosa Müll. Arg. (Rubiaceae) and Sloanea guianensis Benth. (Elaeocarpaceae). The Shannon diversity index was H' = 4.07 nats/individual, showing the great diversity of the area studied. The data emphasize the high complexity of the vegetation studied and are used for comparisons with similar forests.
