Editorial note

The Brazilian Journal of Biology is completing this year sixty years of continuous publication. While this is an achievement, the International Institute of Ecology which is, now, the only organization in charge of the publication, is seeking new ways of maintaining it independently of some financial sources of funding. For that it is proposed to create an Association of the Brazilian Journal of Biology which would support financially the journal. Fifty people responded positively and many more agreed to participate in this Association.

The IIE is in the final stage of preparation of the statutes of this Association.

The Brazilian Journal of Biology is now included in the Scielo's FAPESP system, and in contact with ISI (Institute for Scientific Information), the Editorial Board was informed that the Journal is being considered for application to that system. What is necessary is a continuous publication in English, of very good scientific quality.

A special number, "Biogeochemical cycles in neotropical ecosystems", is now in preparation and every effort is being made to finish this publication until June 2001, with printing in July 2001.

The Editorial Board is working to achieve maximum efficiency and quality; for that it is necessary a quick response from advisors of papers and notes, and we are sure that this standard will be met very soon.
