Abstract
The aim of the present study was to analyze the representations about Brazilian identity that emerged from the opening ceremony of the XV Pan-American Games. In order to do so, the documentary "Rio 2007 Pan-American Games – Opening Ceremony" and news reports published in July, 14th 2007 were used as sources of information. In this event, Brazil's symbolism, translated in elements of its natural and cultural diversity, represent the self-image of the multiethnic harmony and of the festive ethos of "being Brazilian", revealing the democratic essence of a nation who leveled with the antagonisms and social hierarchies. This would be the contribution that the Brazilian nation has to offer to the world.
