ABSTRACT
The article addresses the public financing of sport in subnational entities in Brazil and Portugal, with an emphasis on the comparison between the two contexts. The objective is to describe and comparatively analyze public financing of sport in these countries. The study is characterized as qualitative research combined with descriptive analysis, using mainly documentary research. Although there are differences in the organization of public funding sources for sport, subnational entities in both countries participate prominently in financing this sector. Although Brazil spends more in absolute terms, Portuguese municipalities have higher proportional expenses.
