Impact of physical exercise dependence on quality of life perception in Brazilian master basketball

Abstract

The current study aimed to investigate the association between physical exercise dependence (PED) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) perception in Brazilian master basketball athletes. The sample consisted of 410 male athletes. HRQoL was assessed using the Medical Outcomes Study (SF-36). DEF was assessed with the Negative Addiction Scale. Prevalence Ratio (PR) was used as a measure of association. The results exposed a negative association of DEF and HRQOL, and low DEF levels were associated with eight HRQoL domains (PR between 2.88 and 1.45), and the medium DEF with six HRQoL domains (PE between 1.80 and 1.31). In conclusion, DEF can decrease athletes HRQoL perception levels, both physical and mental aspects.
