Abstract
This study aims to discuss, in the 1970s Rio de Janeiro, the meetings that took place between practitioners of surfeing and ideas related to the counterculture. To reach this aim, we used as sources statements of locals surfers published in books and periodicals. We think that this research allows us to take a step towards better understanding the relationship between sports and sociocultural context, including the giving opportunity to see how the meanings of a sport are changing over time. Furthermore, we hope to shed some light on the notion of counterculture, considering that its interpretation was multiple and diverse.
