Abstract
This article investigates how the establishment of nautical clubs occurred in Rio Grande do Sul at the first decade of the 20th century. For this, newspaper articles that circulated in Rio Grande do Sul cities were analyzed along with a bibliographic review. The sources examined showed that the nautical sports were instituted in the first port cities of the state. This characteristic contributed to the entry of European practices and customs, among them rowing. For this study, the newspapers circulating in the cities were examined. The interpretation of the information revealed that the nautical clubs were configured as a space of dispute and conciliation between the different cultures present in Rio Grande do Sul.
