ABSTRACT
This research aimed to evoke the representations of pugilistic practice produced by the Italian-Brazilian newspaper Il Pasquino Coloniale between the years 1915 and 1939, as part of a study on sports among immigrant groups. The results showed that boxing was represented in different ways, sometimes with criticism of its violence and the money involved, but also with passion and excitement. As a humorous weekly newspaper, Pasquino also mocked the “scientific” identity of modern boxing and, on specific occasions, debated either the natural character of its violence, or the construction of the boxer through experience.
