Abstract
Between 1878 and 1892, it were structured in Rio de Janeiro some pioneering experiences of skating, a practice that obtained fast and intense success. Considering that press has played an important role at that time, this article intends to discuss the meanings attributed to this amusement in fluminenses newspapers and magazines, including its peculiarities compared to other body practices (sports, gymnastics, dance). The aim is to launch a look at this diversity that were in organization in an important moment of the consolidation both of these cultural manifestations and the Brazilian nation, processes that were articulated and had the country capital as a privileged place.
