Qualitative analysis of the reasons to the adhesion and desistance to the practice of resistance exercises in gyms

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reasons of adhesion and desistance to the practice of resistance exercises in gyms through a qualitative investigation. Adherents (n=13) and individuals who dropped out (n=8) of resistance exercises, of both sexes, with ages ranging from 23 to 55 years old, selected in an intentional non-probabilistic manner, in gyms of Florianópolis/SC, participated in the study. The instrument that was utilized was a semi structured interview. Among the main reasons for the practice of resistance exercises were "well being", "improvement of the health" and "body aesthetics". Among the reasons for the desistance were "lack of time", "under qualified professional care" and "lack of equipments for the practice".
