Pandemic, inequality and poverty in Brazilian metropolitan regions

Abstract

The article evaluates the evolution of income inequality and poverty in metropolitan Brazil during the Covid-19 pandemic. The main objective is to analyze the role played, between 2019 and 2021, by federal cash transfer policies – specially the Emergency Aid - with regard to variations in the level of inequality and poverty in the Brazilian metropolitan areas. The data source is the National Household Sample Survey (PNADc – IBGE), annual released, and comprise the twenty-two main metropolitan regions of the country. Through decomposition techniques, the results show the extent to which variations in labor income and cash transfer policies explain the evolution of inequalities and poverty during the pandemic period.
