EVALUATION OF THE INCREASE IN WATER RESERVOIRS AND CORRESPONDING LAND USE, BASED ON TM/LANDSAT-5 IMAGE: CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

This research aimed to study the hydrographic basins of the Pilões and São Gonçalo dams, in the semi-arid region of Paraíba State, Brazil, to evaluate the increase in water reservoirs and the corresponding land use for years 1984 (940mm) and 1990 (442mm). For the years 1984 and 1990, both basins had the same quantity of dams with water sufarce of 4ha. Due to differentiated sizes, they presented different reservoir density indexes. The result of this study shows that there is not a direct relationship between the increase of the number of reservoirs with the increase of the areas of intensive agricultural use of the soil. Two factors corroborate this fact: the first one is that the reservoirs are built for human and animal use; the second is related to geological nature of the basins.
