ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to identify the use of rainwater collection techniques in small farms of Itve municipalities of the semi-and region. The work was conducted in the municipalities of Simplício Mendes (PI), Morada Nova (CE), Angicos (RN), Jeremoabo (BA) and Inajá(PE) in the period from 1996 to 1998. In each town a questionnaire was applied to the selccted farmers by means of a simple random sample of 179 farmers, with the following variables: 1) farmers that use the rural cistern, 2) farmers thal use the dam for supplemental irrigation, 3) farmers that use the undcrground dam, 4) farmers that use the system of collection of rainwater "in situ", and 5) reasons for not using the techniques. The results obtained showed that only 9.5% of farmers use the rural cistern, and that 51.96% of the farmers do not use this technique for lack of financial resources. The other techniques were not adopted by any farmer. With these results it may be concluded that there is a necd for larger dissemination and demonstration of these techniques for small farms.
