This article analyses contemporary society considering the transformations that have taken place in the realms of science, culture and education. It is considered important to bring culture and education back together and incorporate information and communication technologies (ICT) into them. We examine the progress of ICT as well as the movement towards the monopolisation of the mass media and present work being carried out in the Faculty of Education at UFBA in training teachers. We consider it necessary to rethink the educational system, curricular issues in particular. We highlight the importance of the open source movement as promoting a philosophy based on co-operation and collective work and therefore of great importance to education.
