ABSTRACT
The present essay explores the neurotic citizen concept to analyse the type of citizenship promoted in managing the pandemic caused by covid-19. The proposal of a “nonconformist citizenship” emerges from the reflection as a viable alternative to a “neurotic citizenship”, as this presupposes the impoverishment of the democratic quality of societies. The crucial role of education in promoting critical and non-conformist citizenship is highlighted allowing individuals to be aware of their neuroses and to act in accordance with democratic values.
