The purpose of this article is to reflect upon the peculiarity of the process of socialisation and the construction of identity of individuals in the contemporary world. To undertake this analysis I make use of Norbert Elias' concept of configuration, of Pierre Bourdieu's theory of habitus and of Anthony Giddens' institutional concept of modernity. The article deals specifically with an interpretation of the concept of habitus, based on the singularity of those social and cultural conditionings experienced by modern societies.
