Ethics and power in the information society: reviewing the myth of progress

During the 20th Century, global capitalism took complete control of the destiny of technology, freeing it from its metaphysical chains and directing it exclusively to the creation of economic gain. Transformed into a fundamental component in the dispute for markets and in global capitalist accumulation, the technological vectors freed themselves from all considerations of an ethical, social or public policy nature. The results of this process, amongst others, were the increase in the concentration of income and of social exclusion, the danger of the destruction of the human habitat from contamination and genetic manipulation, which threaten the common patrimony of humanity. It is necessary to create a new world hegemony, including but not limited to capital, as the premise for the construction of a better world in which scientific advances are used to the benefit of the great majority of citizens.
