Abstract
In his On physical lines of force Maxwell presented the primary version of his electromagnetic equations, when light was seen as a shear disturbance in a elastic fluid ether. In the present paper I discuss the details of the mechanical model wich served as a trampoline for Maxwell's proposition of the electromagnetic theory of light, its virtues and limitations.
