We present arguments against the use of the Ehrenfest theorem as a classical limiting method of quantum mechanics. In addition, in order to point out the pedagogical relevance of reading the original texts we translate the article by Paul Ehrenfest published in the journal Zeitschrift für Physik in 1927.
